BIOGRAPHY OF LATE ELDER OTISI ODIM (TEACHER OTISI)

BIRTH AND PARENTAGE: In the year 1929, at Ndi Elughu compound, Amangwu , Elughu Nkporo, Elder Otisi Odim was born Mr. & Mrs Odim Okocha Awam. His father popularly known as Odim Agaghaga was a skilled hunter and a"dibia" while his mother Ucha Okpusa (maiden name) was from Ndi Enunu compound, Amangwu, Elughu Nkporo.

 His parents died early and the task of his upbringing and that of his siblings were shouldered by his Uncle and Aunt , late  Ifegwu Okpusa and Ola Okpusa respectfully.

EDUCATION: 
Elder Odim popularly known as Teacher Otisi started his primary education at church of Scotland Mission (SCM) School in 1944. He obtained his First School Leaving certificate (FSLC)in the year 1952.
At school he became a class head boy in standard three, a post he held until standard five. In standard six, he was appointed the school prefect. His quest for continued education took him to a private technical school at Onitsha now Anambra state . This was short-lived as he could not finish his educational career there but later took to teaching career.

WORK LIFE: With the disruption of his higher educational pursuit at Onitsha, he returned home and served under Mr. Ukaegbu U. Ekeoma of Igbere as a probationary Teacher. A service he continued even at Umudike where his master did rural science. He later taught as a full time teacher in several places including Asaga Ohafia in 1958, Ndi Ibe, Okon Ohafia and Elughu Community School until he retired in 1984. The first phase of his teaching career was punctuated by the death of his elder brother Egwuonwu  Odim a business guru, and philanthropist. The cogent need to take care of his family, business and the whole lot of training of many relations forced him to leave for Lagos . At Lagos, he traded in clothes until the civil war struck forcing him to relocate to Onitsha and later home. After the war, he was re- absorbed in 1975 into the teaching profession.

CHRISTIAN LIFE: Although born into a family in which the father and the uncle that later  brought him up were native doctors,Elder Odim chatted a new course as he turned to Christ. At Lagos, he was  one of the pioneer members of the Lagos Presbyterian Church worshipping up till Casino Cinema as worship centre. As as good Christian, back at home he was a Sunday School teacher, a church leader, a preacher, and taught hymns in the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria Nkporo Parish. He was ordained a ruling Elder of the Parish in 1984.

SOCIAL LIFE: Elder Odim from his school days was a good organizer who has people's interest and welfare at heart. He organized extra mural studies at Elughu in which senior students in classes 4 to 6 taught others from class three downwards to encourage academic achievement among students. He was a football captain leading  youths around him like  Kalu Okpusa (Teacher Kalu Okpusa or K O ,later Elder Kalu Okpusa) to football campaigns to places in Nkporo and environs like Abam, Ohafia, Abiriba. He was a member of Nkporo indigenous L A school teachers.

FAMILY LIFE: Elder Odim got married to Eke Kalu Esere of Ndi Orji Ama ekwu Elughu Nkporo after the death of his elder brother. The union was blessed with many children. He loved his family so much and had it under his control. Elder Odim laboured at all cost to provide education for his children and relations as well as every one under his care. At a point before he was re-absorbed into the teaching profession after the war, he had to live by cutting staking ropes (akwari) to sell on occasions to pay the school fees of the elder son (Ifegwu) who had just been admitted into secondary School. Teacher Otisi raised his children and all under him using a combination of biblical instructions and loving affection  He was such a caring father that no matter how small his food was, he never rose from a meal without leaving a portion for for children. Elder Odim was a strict disciplinarian and at the same time a loving father. He does not condone evil. The rod of correction was never lacking in his home. There was the unwritten law of "Don't tell lies; Own up  your faults; Don't be destructive".
He was hospitable, for  years his home was a home away from home for many people, both relatives, strangers and others. Besides his biological children, he raised many other children. His God fearing nature robbed off on his children who today are actively serving the Lord in various places.

HIS LEADERSHIP ROLE: Elder Otisi Odim was a born, experienced and a good leader. His leadership role was characterized by honestly, discipline, selflessness, and firmness. He started community leadership as secretary to Elughu Welfare Union. In 1953 he coordinated the running of the Elughu General community lorry. He was and is still the longest serving Chairman of Elughu Welfare Union (1955 to 1981). He was the Eze Ndi Uzu after the death of Amadi Kalu, a position he held until his demise. An epitome of selfless service , he  sometime faced the menace of armed bandits while serving the community. A public-spirited man he was, who often travelled to many places just to ensure that community decisions were carried out. In partisan politics, he was the Chairman - Social Democratic Party (SDP) Ndi Elu Ward Nkporo. He was the founding father and member board of Governors Elughu Secondary Commercial School. Elder Odim was a principled man, resolute and doesn't relent towards the achievement of set goals.

HIS LIFE PHILOSOPHY: Elder Odim's great life and achievements were guided by certain principles of behavior. He was and is still known for these wise sayings (1) "Ma Uka alaghi tasie Biko, y'ola iha akam gini eme" - meaning if a case or matter does not end by apology or peaceful resolution,it will end by strife- showing his resoluteness.
(2) "Oha reme iberibe so wa mee"- meaning as a leader always abide by the general decision no matter how wiser your individual stand may be - depicting his selflessness in duty.

DEATH:
To this legend fate dealt a blow using certain accomplishes. His demise was on the early hours of April 6th 1996. To God be the glory for such a great life as Elder Otisi Odim.
